Students become Ambassadors for UK-German Connection

Congratulations to students Abi Best and Dani Hayward for becoming Ambassadors for the UK-German organisation. Read more about the organisation here. The UK-German Connection was set up in 2004 in response to the desire of both countries to strengthen the links between each other in a initiative way - using children and young people. Both students are members of the Youth Council and part of their role is to encourage other students, both at college and in the local enviroment, to take up German as a language. Here's what Abi and Dani have to say ...

Abi and Dani with Martin Ward and German teacher Jane BrettHi I'm Abi, I'm in my second year at Shrewsbury Sixth Form college and am currently studying German, French, and Maths A levels, Spanish AS and am in the process of completing an extended project.  I enjoy languages and also like swimming and playing the flute.

Hello I'm Dani, I am also in my second year of Sixth Form studying German, French and English Combined.  I have taken up a Spanish GCSE this year and am doing Extended Project as well. I like languages, as I love the idea of travelling and being able to communicate.

We have recently joined the UK-German Connection Youth Council, which involves having a part in increasing contact and understanding between young people in the two countries.  Whether you're learning the language or just interested in Germany, travel or even journalism, joining the Youth Council is a fantastic opportunity. For example we are now attending a 3 day, all expenses paid trip to Germany in December to attend seminars and work on the creation of a new magazine.  The many different sections of UK-German connection mean that there is something there to interest everyone, from media seminars to drama workshops.

The aim is to make German more accessible to others by showing the opportunities available and promoting the understanding of German culture in an original way.  We are hoping to do some work in primary schools and possibly secondary schools as well to encourage other young people to get involved.
