A golden award by royal appointment for SSFC students

Ex-Shrewsbury Sixth Form College students Quentin Otto, Abi Best, Amy Finnigan, and Emlyn Knight have recently received their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards. The Gold Award Presentation (GAP), held at St James’ Palace in London, is a celebration and recognition of their achievements and is a unique event and a fitting culmination to mark the hard work, determination and perseverance required.

This highly prestigious award valued by universities and employers, demands at least a two year commitment to complete given the level of activities required. As well as doing an 80K expedition over four days, participants have to learn a skill, do a physical activity, complete a residential experience and volunteer in the community; all this as well as committing to a two year A level programme of study and in many cases being involved in other activities too.

Approximately 35 students a year are involved in this programme at SSFC which is offered as part of the extensive sport and recreation programme.

Principal Martin Ward comments “Quentin, Abi, Amy and Emlyn are fantastic ambassadors for the college. They are prime examples of young people who not only achieve in the classroom and the exam hall, but working in teams in the great outdoors. They symbolise all that we aim to achieve at college and I pass on my congratulations and best wishes for the future
