Following in the footsteps of ex-student Alan Whiteley, Bess Robson has been selected for a place with the prestigious Project Trust* gap year organisation.
Whilst Alan spent his time at the Tian Zhu National Middle School in China, Bess will be experiencing life in Knysna in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. She'll be working as a volunteer at an Outward Bound centre which suits her talents very well as she is a keen sportswoman.
Selection for the Project Trust experience included a weeks residential course on the island of Coll in the Hebrides where the Trust is located and run from. The Trust believes this is an excellent way of preparing those interested in volunteering in very challenging environments.
Bess also has to raise over £4,500 to support her placement. She has plans to cycle the width of England and is running a lottery to help raise money and hopes that people will donate money to support her and this very worthwhile venture. Click here for a copy of Bess' leaflet explaining her plans.
Anyone interested in supporting Bess can donate via her Just Giving page - http://www.justgiving.com/Besslearnsafrikaan
*Project Trust, the original Gap Year, places volunteers to work overseas for a year out, aimed at 17-19 year old school leavers in full time education. Types of work include social services, English teaching, outdoor activity and community development schemes. There are projects in over 25 non-European countries. Volunteers are given assistance from Project Trust to raise a proportion of their costs through fund-raising activities. Living expenses, flights, food and accommodation are provided.
