Staff and students at Shrewsbury Sixth Form College are today celebrating excellent A Level results with 10% of all entries being awarded the new A* grade.
The College is the largest A level examination centre in Shropshire with 613 students taking more than 1918 individual examinations in 45 different subjects. Results at the College are significantly above national averages in terms of pass rates and points scores.
Commenting on the achievements Principal Martin Ward, said ‘This is another set of tremendous A level results. The pass rate is an impressive 98.5% with significantly high proportions of higher grades with A* grades at 10%, A*-B grades at 56% and A*-C grades at 79%. This outstanding performance reflects the commitment of students and staff and we hope that with all the concerns about university places that these results will serve as a strong base for student progression to Higher Education and Employment.
We have a strong team of advisors in place in college from 8.30 am to help students in making their decisions for the next important step.”
At A level, students took a very wide range of courses and there was excellence across the board. There were over 100 entries in each of Mathematics, English and Geography, and over 250 entries in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
Underlying the headline rate there are many individual success stories. 6 students this year have achieved the grades required for Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Special congratulations are in order for Sana Ayub (Magdalene Cambridge), Hannah Fox (Peterhouse Cambridge), Daniel Greenwood (Magdalen Oxford), Richard Nicholson (Hertford Oxford), Quentin Otto (Emmanuel Cambridge) and Simon Wood (Churchill Cambridge) and an amazing 81 students have gained all grade As or A*s in all their A level exams.
Tim Jones the Chair of the Corporation offered his ‘warmest congratulations’ to students and staff. ‘I am delighted that A level results have been maintained at such high levels. Overall results are excellent and there are many individual success stories where students have achieved their personal best. Such fine achievements reflect the commitment of the students, the dedication of the staff team and build on the excellent work of our primary and secondary partner schools.’
