A level success at Shrewsbury Sixth Form College

Staff and students at Shrewsbury Sixth Form College are today celebrating excellent A Level results with more than half the students gaining A*-B grades and pass rates improving to a terrific 98.5%.

The College is the largest A level examination centre in Shropshire with 630 students taking more than 1982 individual examinations in 45 different subjects. Results at the College are improving and significantly above national averages in terms of pass rates and points scores.

Commenting on the achievements Principal Martin Ward, said

‘In a year when A level results are so important for students in terms of their progression to University or employment it is great to see such a high level of achievement across the whole of the A level programme. The pass rate is an impressive 98.5% with significantly high proportions of higher grades with A*-B grades at 52% and A*-C grades at 78%. This is a testament to the expertise of the staff, and the effective relationship they have developed with students”

College is open from 8.30 am on Thursday 18 August, and a strong team of advisors will be on hand to help students in making their decisions for the next important step.”

At A level, students took a very wide range of courses and there was excellence across the board. There were over 150 entries in both Mathematics and English, 100+ entries in History, Geography and Sociology, and over 270 entries in the sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics).

Underlying the headline rate there are many individual success stories. All students who were offered places at Oxford or Cambridge this year have achieved the grades required. Special congratulations are in order for Michael Mahoney (Clare College, Cambridge), Charlotte Rapson (Magdalen College, Oxford), Elliot Reynolds (University College, Oxford) and Sophie Williams (Newnham College, Cambridge) and an amazing 63 students have gained all grade As or A*s in all their A level exams.

Tim Jones the Chair of the Corporation offered his ‘warmest congratulations’ to students and staff. ‘I am delighted that A level results have been maintained at such high levels. Overall results are excellent and there are many individual success stories where students have achieved their personal best. Such fine achievements reflect the commitment of the students, the dedication of the college staff and build on the excellent work of our primary and secondary partner schools.’
