  • Who is it for?

Autocare Technicians play a key role in maintaining, servicing and repairing light vehicles to ensure they are safe and roadworthy. They work in garages, dealerships and vehicle service centres across the automotive sector.

The broad purpose of this apprenticeship is to develop practical mechanical skills, technical knowledge and professional behaviours needed to progress into a competent, fully qualified vehicle technician. It provides a strong foundation in vehicle systems, routine servicing, diagnostics and customer care.

  • Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this apprenticeship.

Where GCSE Maths and English at grade 4/C or above have not been achieved, apprentices may be required to work towards Functional Skills Level 2 in these subjects during the apprenticeship (depending on age and employer requirements).

Employers may set additional entry criteria based on the role.

  • What does the course involve?

    Hands-on training & college learning

Apprentices are employed full time in a garage, dealership or vehicle service environment while attending college on a day-release basis for technical training. They develop practical and theoretical skills in:

    • Understanding the role of an Autocare Technician
    • Vehicle health checks, inspections and safety procedures
    • Routine servicing tasks
    • Tyre, battery, filter and basic component replacement
    • Introduction to vehicle diagnostics and fault identification
    • Using tools, equipment and workshop systems safely
    • Recording service and repair information accurately
    • Health & safety, environmental and industry regulations
    • Teamwork, time management and professional workplace behaviours
    • Effective communication with colleagues and customers

As the apprenticeship progresses, apprentices build confidence and begin to complete tasks more independently, under supervision. The programme prepares learners for progression into higher-level automotive technician roles.

  • How is the course assessed?

Training is delivered at our London Road Campus on a one-day-per-week day release model, agreed with employers before the start of the programme. Apprentices are also supported through regular workplace visits, observations and progress reviews by an assessor.

Throughout the apprenticeship there is continuous apprenticeship assessment, leading towards the completion of an End Point Assessment (EPA), which typically includes:

    • A practical skills assessment
    • A knowledge-based test
    • A professional discussion
    • A review of workplace evidence

This ensures apprentices can demonstrate the full range of skills, knowledge and behaviours required for the occupation.

  • Additional Notes

This Level 2 Autocare Technician apprenticeship typically takes 30 months to complete, followed by the End Point Assessment period. Duration may vary depending on prior experience and employer requirements.

  • What do I do next?

To be an Autocare Technician apprentice, you will need an employer who can offer you a specific role relevant to this apprenticeship and release you for your training. Once you have an employer in place, you can apply online.
